Tranquoizier
Tranquoizier is that floaty happy glide along with life feeling that you get when everything is beautiful. It may last only a few seconds, but every second is worth it. My first attempts at writing songs were as a kid, generally trying to write country songs, and making up synth parts on my toy piano. I played the violin for five years in the school orchestra, and have toyed with guitar and bass. However, I am most prolific at making electronica style music both for midi and on Garage Band. Some of the midi songs that I created ended up being the sound track to my film, The Hebrew Project. Later Garage Band loop combinations became my concept album, Muffins in Space, the first release under the Tranquoizier moniker. What I am most proud of is “Last Chance Disaster.” The song came to me in 2004, when I was a struggling college student at the University of Oklahoma. It reflects an idealization of a hard life in Oklahoma, and a yearning to escape with a good friend. It is partially autobiographical and partially inspired by its co-writer, Jon Carrube. Jon created the melody and guitar part. I wrote the lyrics and a synth part which does not appear on the single version. We recorded a demo version which was much slower and shoegazer in style. In 2011, we entered Grey Havens Studios to work with my good friend Grey on creating a professional recording. I primarily sing prayers at my synagogue which made me much more comfortable with the idea of making a professional recording. Grey plays Jon’s guitar part, and Jon and I focus on singing. Grey then layered Mikey Harbour’s drums and synth, and his own synth and bass parts to create the fully realized single version. I love a lot of music, but my primary influences would be great classic rock such as the Beatles, the Monkees, the Doors, as well as modern geniuses like of Montreal, Deerhoof, the Flaming Lips, and Modest Mouse.
“Last Chance Disaster” is professionally recorded pop song featuring Grey, Jon Carrube, Mikey Harbour, and I. “Last Chance Disaster” features Jon Carrube (vocals), D. Lang (vocals), Mikey Harbour (drums, synth), and Grey (guitar, synth, bass).
“Last Chance Disaster”
I wrote the lyrics for “Last Chance Disaster” back in 2004, inspired by the poverty of being an Oklahoma college student, many weekends of hanging out with my good friend Jon, and kind of in the vein of “Two of Us” by the Beatles. This song is the end product of collaboration between a poet (me) and my massively talented musician friends (Jon, Grey, and Mikey). It is a philosophical trip down memory lane.
Jon had composed a guitar part and melody for it. In our 2010 demo, which features Jon and I singing, I had also composed a keyboard part, which does not make the final cut. On July 24th, 2011, Jon Carrube, Grey, and I got together at Grey Havens Studios in Enid, Oklahoma to record “Last Chance Disaster.”
Grey played the guitar part that Jon had composed, and Jon and I sang vocals. Grey later went back and further developed the song with Mikey Harbour, transforming a little acoustic piece into what you hear now, a 3:11 pop song.

Last Chance Disaster Lyrics
Coffee shops and cigarettes
Ramen noodles. How could I forget
Napping down at the laundry mat.
Speeding down the dirt roads past
a hurricane of silent memories.
(a hurricane…)
Staying out ’til 3 AM
Forgetting every place we’ve ever been.
Skipping class and ditching work
Running from everyone with a smirk
Shouting “just forget me!”
(Shouting…)
It’s a last chance disaster
Dream again with a whirlwind in my brain
Speed it up. Won’t go any faster.
Scream again and bury all your pain.
No direction in this life
A thousand philosophies of strife
Hide the pain inside your cup
Drink it down, time to give up.
Don’t you dare give them your glory.
(Don’t you dare…)
